Richest People in Singapore

The report card of the top 40 richest people in Singapore was published in the Straits Times recently. From the analysis of the listing, most of them prospered through Property and Finance Sectors and have their companies Public Listed. The top 40 had a combined wealth of US$ 39 billion as at June 2010.

We are all given the same twenty-four hours a day. It is interesting to see how people can accumulate wealth faster than the others. The basic investment for most Singaporean is their home. I do not aim to reach their stage of wealth. What I want is to have a reasonable comfortable and happy life for my family.

Remembering My Father

My father passed away on Friday, 29 July 1983 while I was doing my military In-Camp training. He was one of the top students in Raffles Institution Secondary School with seven distinctions for his Cambridge Examination. He left me an inheritance of eight Singapore dollars and his legacy. The number eight means prosperity for many Chinese. He had inherited a share of land in Choa Chu Kang from his late parents. The land was quite big as it was measured in hectares. His share of land was given to my mother when he passed away. In a way, he had PROSPERED through inheritance and having a dozen children. The land was later acquired by our government under the Land Acquisition Act and was given some compensation to the shareholders of the land.

I saw him mainly during Chinese New Year when I was young. He worked for his relatives in Klang, Kuala Lumpur while I was in Singapore with my mother and siblings. He would come back for a few days and off he went again. Nevertheless, he would faithfully remit money through Hokkien Huay Kuan (a Hokkien Clan Association) to Singapore to support the family. It’s only when he retired that we had more time together. He brought me to National Library with my brother, taught me how to use a typewriter and gave me English tuition. But it felt strange initially, as there wasn’t much close bonding as with my mother. His eye sight was getting worse after he retired. Even with his poor eyesight, he would faithfully take a cab to Novena church alone.

Now that his gone, memories of him still linger on. By the way, he named his all children after the royal family in England. Even, my mother was named after a queen of England by him. Our whole family is a ‘royal family’ and we used to live in a neighborhood with roads named after the royal family of England. You named it and chances are that you will get it right that it will be the name of one of my family members.

New Multi-Million Dollar Building in Choa Chu Kang

This is a new multi-million dollar building in Choa Chu Kang. It is said to be built at a cost of S$ 260 million on a 9.54 hectare land. It started operation in this month July 2010. Air-con Food Court and Supermarket are open to public. This is the new ITE College West campus combining 5 smaller network of ITE campuses together.

With expected surge in student traffic, some will be happy while others will gripe. Those businesses around the area will have increase in Sales and prosper, while those staying around will not like students loitering in void decks after school hours affecting their once peaceful environment.

Hope the students will treasure this building and take pride in helping to maintain its pristine condition. Look forward to its grand opening.

2010 FIFA World Cup Final

FIFA world cup is held every four years. Millions of people around the world have been following this event of the year. The final between Spain and Netherlands (Holland) will be broadcast live on Sunday 11 Jul 2010 at 2.30pm (EDT, ie. For Singapore, it will be on Monday 12 Jul 2010 at 2.30am). Some countries will be broadcasting this event using the latest 3D technology.

This event has prospered many companies and the players. The total prize money for the players is US$ 420 million (about S$ 588 million) with the champion team walking away with US$ 30 million (about S$ 42 million). Food and beverage companies, betting outlets have seen their daily takings increased. I can’t imagine how much FIFA will prosper from organizing this event. The tickets for the final have already been sold out.

Who do you think will win?

The World Cup craze is all over the world. Many different animals, from octopus to birds etc. have been used to help predict the winner. Those who are betting heavily may hope for the ‘god of fortune’ to visit them. Whatever the outcome does not bother me. I'm not an ardent football fan and don't believe in this sort of betting to prosper.
If you ask me, my wild guess for the winner is Spain. Best wishes to those who are betting.

Note: FIFA is a French acronym for ‘Fédération Internationale de Football Association’ or ‘the International Federation of Association Football’ in English. (Source: FIFA official website www.fifa.com )

DBS, POSB Services Affected by Computer Glitch on Monday 5 Jul 2010

Were you one of those affected by the DBS, POSB bank’s computer glitch when the bank computer system went down island wide for about seven hours? I was one on them. I couldn’t do my internet banking transaction. Many customers were angry and frustrated. Can we penalize the bank for our lost time or Electronic Road Pricing fines as we cannot top up our cash card? Whenever we are late for payment or our check bounced due to some recording error of our check book balance, we will have to pay a hefty penalty charge to the bank.

I shall verify my bank balance today. Who knows, one significant zero may goes missing from my bank balance. We are Singaporeans. We’ve branded ourselves as Kiasu citizens. (Kiasu - Hokien word which means afraid to lose out). That's how many Singaporeans prosper. So better be Kiasu than never!

My Church 43rd Anniversary

Fish - A symbol of wealth and prosperity in Chinese culture. It is also a symbol for Christians.

My church is blessed by God and has prospered throughout the 43 years. From a humble beginning conducting her services in a small apartment, it’s now having her services in a beautiful auditorium inside a Shopping Centre.

A lunch was held at Hilltop Garden Restaurant at Civil Service Club @ Bukit Batok to celebrate this special occasion. The message on ‘Faithfulness’ was delivered by our invited guest speaker, Rev Emily Tan, our ex-church member. She is now serving God as a senior pastor in her own church. God has blessed and prospered her also for her faithfulness in serving Him.

All the church members and invited guests who attended enjoyed the celebration lunch together.
